Northern Bohuslän

Here in norra (northern) Bohuslän it is the terrain that separates and the water that link us. At least it used to be so in old times. It was only by sea our ancestors could hope to travel over long distances in different kind of vessels. This made the strongest link in the cultural and commercial chain.

Common Community

The coastal lands around the North Sea together form a community of their own. Scots and Englishmen, Danes and Norwegians and the people of Bohuslän share a common culture as can be seen in the boats they sail, the tools they use and the music they make, and also in the folk dances they perform.

Gothenburg

The deep inlets of the Bohuslän coast have always offered safe and speedy access to the hinterland, both for goods and the way of life. From the 1600s onwards, Gothenburg has functioned as Sweden’s Gateway to the West. The city became Sweden’s principal port, trading with England and Scotland, continental Europe and, a century later with the Far East. Gothenburg became also the most important harbor for people to emigrate to England, South and North America in 1800s and early 1900s.

Treasures from the sea

The population of northern Bohuslän was for a long time poor people making a way of living as farmers, fishermen and quarrymen, even often a combination of this. Later on there was some development in the engineering industry with focus on the shipyard in Uddevalla, and some cannery using the treasure from the sea. Today Bohuslän got a miscellaneous working life all from trading, shopping, health care, tourism and miscellaneous manufacturing industry.
